Durban Attractions - Things to do in Durban, South Africa

Durban in South Africa has probably become a huge tourist attraction since this huge seaside city was propelled onto the global stage with the staging of the World Cup. This once relatively unknown city is sure to catch the attention of the world's tourists with the year-round tropical temperatures, fantastic surf and beautiful surrounding areas.

In the city itself, various companies offer Durban city tours as well as cruises around the harbor and out to sea. Ushaka Marine World in Durban is one of the city's top attractions that houses Africa's largest aquarium and water park. Ushaka is also just steps from the warm Indian Ocean and the sunny beaches of Durban by the beach. Many companies also offer "booze cruises", including partial views.

Most Durban hotels are located along the famous Golden Mile, but many hotels and resorts are also located further north, in resorts such as Umhlanga and Umdloti. Here you will find many ways to relax while taking in the sea air, and most hotels cater to small children, with children's clubs and many activities for the children to take part in while relaxing.

If you fancy a true African safari, the Tala Game Reserve is only a 45 minute drive from Durban, but does not have the full "Big Five". If the Big Five is what you're interested in, head to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, approx. 2 hours drive north of Durban. This is a fantastic safari park that you can easily reach in a day trip from Durban or spend a few days there in a lovely rustic lodge right in the heart of the African bush. The glorious inspiring Drakensberg Mountains and the small mountain kingdom of Lesotho are also easily accessible from Durban.

From Durban, you can also visit the battlefields of Spioenkop, Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift to see for yourself the fields on which the famous battles between the Boers, Zulus and the British armies were fought. The story is fascinating where the Zulus with spear managed to overpower the British army with their guns and other ammunition.

There is also the Midlands Meander, up and in the area just outside Durban known as The Midlands, where you will find quaint farm stalls selling local produce from cheese to beer and even chocolate, as well as beautifully handcrafted garments such as bags and shoes.
